Nothing says ribbed abs and sexiness llike a buttoned-up vest, a fashion some of the hottest TV and movie actors have been sporting.

There's just something about a guy in a suit vest, minus the suit. In television shows and movies, actors and their characters often wear a vest well.

1. Taylor Lautner

This might be the guy who puts vests back on men all over the country. When he showed up at the Teen Choice Awards in 2009 in a smooth charcoal grey vest and a loosely-knotted tie, the swooning did commence. Since then, the "Twilight" series star has been spotted in less formal vests and blue jeans, but he seems to know how to get the right fit for both: tight and buttoned.. Oh and . . . Robert Pattinson rivals Lautner in the vest-wearing appeal, but Lautner still wins out for the closer fit.

2. Gary Cole

Here’s an early generation doing the vest thing. Remember the late 90's television series "American Gothic"? It was a freaky Southern small town drama that got freakier as the series went along - notably when Gary Cole, the town sheriff and devil in disguise (seriously, he was The Devil) really came out in all his evilness. The sheriff's traditional outfit was dark jeans, t-shirt, and tight black vest buttoned up all the way. Then, with that smoky look, that wavy air, and deep voice, the picture of Southern macho crazy-coolness was complete. That show needs a revival!

3. Simon Baker

Here's another actor in a strange role - a reformed psychic working in some un-definable capacity for the police in the hit show "The Mentalist." There are some good looking guys (and gals) on this show, but it's just hard to take your eyes off Baker when he's on-screen. And he is always wearing a vest. Collared shirt, often powder-blue, with the sleeves rolled up. Maybe the very bottom button will be unbuttoned. Otherwise, he's styling in that vest buttoned up and looking dashing with his gorgeous curly blonde hair and that twinkle in his eyes when he knows something no one else does, which is pretty often.

4. Colin Farrell

When he dresses up for awards shows, Farrell has been known to wear a traditional suit and a snazzy, eye-catching vest, like the blue and green tartan one he wore to the 2009 Golden Globes. But he sports a good-looking vest in casual wear, too, though he does grunge-it-up quite a bit, with his Oxford shirt often unbuttoned too far down and the tails hanging out too much on all sides. Still, sporting his Fedora and the tattoos snaking out from the bottom of those rolled up sleeves, Farrell can be quite fetching in his vest. He just needs to keep it buttoned up, since everything else is hanging out so much.

5. John Corbett

John Corbett has been known to sport a vest, especially when he was playing in his country music band. Fans who remember Corbett from "Northern Exposure" will know the funky, sexy star's laidback style was obvious even then - though the only vest he sported on that show was the goose-feathered, puffy variety. Some guys can wear leather, and some can't, and this guy definitely can, especially when it's a leather vest with a plain white shirt underneath, atop a pair of worn blue jeans that show the lanky actor to his full sexiness.

Loose, unbuttoned vests, like the Jonas Brothers are prone to wearing just don't have sex appeal. An unbuttoned vest (like Justin Timberlake often sports) looks too much like school bus attire. The only one who can pull off the unbuttoned vest look is Johnny Depp, but he can wear anything and look like a superstar.
